Helen Hunt Biography
Helen Hunt was born on June 15th, 1963, in Culver City, California. Hunt, a three-time Emmy nominee, is the daughter of Gordon Hunt, a prominent acting coach and director. She made her acting debut as a child in the 1973 television movie, "Pioneer Women." This role led to roles in other TV movies including "Bill: On His Own," "Choices of the Heart," "Land of Little Rain" for the PBS network and "The Miracle of Kathy Miller," one of favorite roles in which she played an athlete who overcame an injury to compete again.
Hunt has starred in numerous other television films: "Into the Badlands," "Murder in New Hampshire: The Pamela Smart Story" and "In the Company of Darkness." Hunt also starred on the series "My Life and Times," and had a recurring role on "St. Elsewhere". She also made a guest appearance on the HBO series, "The Hitchhiker," for which she was nominated for a Cable Ace Award.
After completing the feature film "Project X," Hunt moved to New York to gain more stage experience. In 1989, she achieved her dream of performing on Broadway when she was cast in "Our Town." Her other stage work includes Bianca in the 1990 'Shakespeare in the Parks' production of "The Taming of the Shrew," with Tracey Ullman and Morgan Freeman. In between her TV and stage performances, Hunt continued to work in features, including "Peggy Sue Got Married" and "Miles from Home" with Richard Gere. Other big-screen credits are "The Waterdance" (which she freely admits she "pursued like a bloodhound"), a role in which she won critical raves for her performance, and in "Mr. Saturday Night," opposite Billy Crystal.
This past summer, she completed filming her latest feature, "Kiss of Death," in which she co-stars opposite David Caruso and Nicholas Cage. Hunt has also guest starred in an episode of 'The Bionic Woman' and 'Highway to Heaven', cameoed in 'Friends' and guest hosted an episode of 'Saturday Nite Live.'
Hunt never seriously considered a lengthy commitment to a TV series until she got a call from actor/comedian Paul Reiser. "Paul called me at home to discuss the role as his wife in his new pilot," says Hunt. "I saw that he had a passion about marriage. He talked about things like, `Once you set up shop in a married relationship, how do you set the rules and still keep the magic going?' And I responded favorably."
Currently, Hunt has been nominated for three Emmys ('93,'94,'95) for best actress in a Comedy Series. In addition to her Emmy nominations, Hunt has also been nominated for an American Television award. She has won the Golden Globe Award twice as Best Actress in a Comedy Series, as well as being voted Best Actress by Viewers for Quality Television. She is currently starring in the movie, 'Twisters', which was just released (May 96) where she plays a storm chaser. Filming for the fifth season of 'Mad About You' is planned to resume in late August.
Outside of work, Helen Hunt is rumored to be dating Hank Azaria, an actor whose credits include roles in 'Quiz Show' and 'Pretty Woman' and a star in the comedy "Herman's Head." He recently guest starred on 'Friends' and does numerous voices in the hit cartoon, "The Simpson's."
Helen spends her free time studying dance, yoga, and painting. From time to time, she will invite fellow actors to her home for informal play readings.
